Shoreline

Shoreline is a part of my collection - An Ancient Hand.

An Ancient Hand, began with a beach pebble, whose distinctive lines, engraved on the surface by nature, caught my eye, while out walking along the coast.

I set about capturing the essence of those markings, by hand-printing canvas and then, once stretched, cocooning it in fine linen thread.

I love the juxtaposition of the fine linen with the locally produced jute twine (more often used in the garden). To me, these two, in combination, sum up what I love about coil basketry - its versatility and its accessibility.

Shoreline is a basketry vessel, worked in jute twine. A band of cocooned canvas pebbles, rests upon the widest part of vessel. The pebbles are joined by a single band of coil, which mimics the waves lapping against the shore. The colours used in this basket were matched to a piece of tarnished copper found on the shoreline.
