Sea Urchin Wall-Hanging

Sea Urchin is part of my collection - An Ancient Hand.

An Ancient Hand, began with a beach pebble, whose distinctive lines, engraved on the surface by nature, caught my eye, while out walking along the coast.

I set about capturing the essence of those markings, by hand-printing canvas and then, once stretched, cocooning it in fine linen thread.

I love the juxtaposition of the fine linen with the locally produced jute twine (more often used in the garden). To me, these two, in combination, sum up what I love about coil basketry - its versatility and its accessibility.

Sea Urchin is the only piece in the collection that doesn't include the line markings, inspired by the pebble. I wanted to see how the hand-printing would translate to other patterns inspired by my coastal finds, so I used a sea urchin shell as my starting point.

Once stretched over card and wool batting, I cocooned the hand-printed canvas with linen thread in colours of rust and gold, which I see so often in the landscapes here. The linen coil basketry makes a frame for the central sea urchin design.

It has a simple loop of thread attached at the back for hanging and can be hung on a simple nail fixing.
