Mussel and Pearl

Mussel and Pearl is part of my collection - An Ancient Hand.

An Ancient Hand, began with a beach pebble, whose distinctive lines, engraved on the surface by nature, caught my eye, while out walking along the coast.

I set about capturing the essence of those markings, by hand-printing canvas and then, once stretched, cocooning it in fine linen thread.

I love the juxtaposition of the fine linen with the locally produced jute twine (more often used in the garden). To me, these two, in combination, sum up what I love about coil basketry - its versatility and its accessibility.

Mussel and Pearl is a jute basketry wall-hanging taking the form of a mussel shell, with a linen and hand-printed canvas pearl.

It can be hung on a wall with two simple nail fixings. The basketry mussel shell is curved in towards the wall and so it will just sit on the nails.
