What will you learn?

In this course, I will show you how to celebrate your sea treasures, by creating bespoke coil baskets to cocoon them.
I will show you how to work with materials that are easily accessible and take you through the process, step-by-step, for a limpet shell, pebble and mussel shell.
This will give you the skills and confidence that you need to tackle your own projects and cocoon all sorts of found objects and gifts from nature.
The course covers appropriate materials and tools to use for your projects; different ways to start a basket, taking the shape of the object into consideration; how to keep your work neat; how to follow the shape of an object and how to finish your basket.
It is suitable for a complete beginner or someone who has made baskets before, but would like to gain the confidence to work around found objects.

In the final section of this course, I will show you how to cocoon a mussel shell, whilst leaving the mother of pearl interior and outer colour of the mussel visible.
This is the most difficult of the three projects and is useful when considering how to work around unusual or irregular shapes. I will take you through the process step-by-step to show you how to make an open-framework start for your mussel shell; what important checks to make, to create a bespoke fit; how to work a turned edge, to frame the shell and how to finish your work.
